So, basically [livejournal.com profile] svmadelyn's The Thirteen Challenge is the best idea ever and my brain is currently fried...

Siren!John
Siren!John

Not being a native speaker of English (it is actually my third language after Spanish and German) I have no idea what the difference between a siren and a mermaid is... in Spanish it is the same word, "sirena".
Is it just that Sirens from the Greek myth are *evil*? Or are there differences in appearance?

EDIT: [livejournal.com profile] rokeon was kind enough to explain that Greek Sirens had the bodies of birds and the heads or faces of women. So this is more of Mermaid!John or Modern!Siren!John (I also have the suspicion that had I tried to make John into a traditional Greek siren, he would have looked something like a chicken or possibly a chocobo, with his hair)

I'm not sure about physical differences, but mermaids are typically not ascribed any magical powers aside from being aquatic and really hot. (Lorelai don't count, they're their own thing.) Sirens, however, have the ability to sing the unprepared to their doom. So, basically, superpowers *and* evil.

The Greeks said they had the bodies of birds and the heads or faces of women. Other stories do depict them as mermaids, though, or just as beautiful women that look totally human.

...the little shell necklace is just perfect.

John with feathers on his head

I wrote that, once. It just fits too well.

The myths got blended- harpies were originally women with wings, they didn't become bird-monsters until later. The sirens were bird-women (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Image:Ulysses_and_the_Sirens.jpg) first.

The harp is cute, but the shells make this perfect!

Sirens sing songs that are irresistible to the listener-- in various lore, they sing mariners to their deaths (weakness: earplugs).

That is...oddly hot. Where can I seek professional help?

The shell dog tags win at EVERYTHING.
