We have been working on the tag set for 102.5 hours, and the number of individual fandom nominations has gone down from 5058 to 1660. There are 2054 approved fandoms now in the tag set.

Thank you for your answers to the previous queries! We have some more, and some lingering:

Дуэлянт | The Duelist (2016) - We can't find Pyotr Yakovlev's brother. Could the nominator please confirm he appears in the film?

Extraction (2013) - We can't find a Victor. Could the nominator please confirm he appears in the film?

灵契 | Ling Qi | Spiritpact - This has been nominated with overlapping characters, using Japanese and Chinese names respectively: You Keika, Tanmoku Ki, Tanmoku Rakugetsu, and You Nei; and Yang Jinghua, Duanmu Xi, Duanmu Siming, and Qin Siyao. Could each nominator please confirm which media they mean, and can we please combine these character names using one of the versions?

No Game No Life - Kamiya Yuu - we're a little confused by the character 『 』| Kuuhaku | Blank. Could the nominator please give their reasoning for nominating this character separately?

A Place to Call Home (TV) - We can't find the character Tom. Could the nominator please give us a pointer?

Plantagenets Series - Sharon Kay Penman - For Geoffrey Plantagenet, could the nominator please confirm they mean Geoffrey V Count of Anjou, or some other character?

Six of Crows Series - Leigh Bardugo - It's not clear to us that Nikolai Lantsov belongs here. Could the nominator please give us their reasoning?

Smosh - the characters nominated are Keith Leak Jr., Noah Grossman, Olivia Sui, and Shayne Topp. Could the nominator please clarify if this is a nomination for RPF, or for fictionalized characters that share the names of the real people?

Sylvester or the Wicked Uncle - Georgette Heyer For Lady Marlow, could the nominator please confirm whether they mean Lady Verena Marlow or Lady Constance Marlow?

These Old Shades - Georgette Heyer - As far as we can tell, Dominic Alastair does not appear in this book. (He is also nominated in The Devil's Cub.) Could the nominator please give their reasoning for nominating him here?

Trial and Error (TV 2017) - We can't find the character Anne Cox. Could the nominator please confirm and give us pointers to when she appeared?

All Media Types fandoms
We need clarification from the person (or people) who nominated the following fandoms. Please specify a single version of the canon and provide a link to your nominations page so we can confirm the nomination. If these aren't answered, the fandoms will be rejected:

  • The Martian - All Media Types, characters: Beth Johanssen, Chris Beck, Mark Watney (The Martian - All Media Types)

  • A Room With a View - All Media Types, characters: Charlotte Bartlett, Eleanor Lavish

  • The Witches of Eastwick - All Media Types, characters: Alexandra Medford, Darryl Van Horne, Jane Spofford, Sukie Ridgemont [if we don't hear back from the nominator on this one, we may go with the 1987 film]

Ensemble characters
We will accept labels like “the Council” or “the hunters” for characters in cases where the ensemble does not have different distinct characters in it. For the following fandoms, please either confirm that there are no distinct characters in the group, or pick a single character out of the group you’ve nominated.
  • Dirk Gently's Holistic Detective Agency (TV 2016) - The Rowdy 3

  • The Scarlet Pimpernel - Baroness Orczy - The League of the Scarlet Pimpernel

  • Velvet Goldmine - Flaming Creatures

  • Formula 1 RPF - characters: Alain Prost, Ayrton Senna

  • Pop Music RPF - characters: Beyoncé Knowles, Jay-Z, Justin Timberlake

We have been working on the tag set for 36 hours, and the number of individual fandom nominations has gone down from 5058 to 3086. There are 1076 approved fandoms now in the tag set*.

Please help us with the following issues and queries!

Wheel of Time - Robert Jordan - Both Elan Morin Tedroni and Ishamael | Moridin are nominated; other Forsaken are nominated with their original names. Please either explain why you think they should be separated out, or confirm we can approve both tags as Elan Morin Tedroni.

Expert Judgment on Markers to Deter Inadvertent Human Intrusion... - Sandia Labs - As far as we can tell, Color Changing Cat is not actually from this canon, but a different exercise in considering the problems of long-term nuclear waste storage - see http://www.slate.com/blogs/the_eye/2014/05/14/_99_percent_invisible_by_roman_mars_designing_warning_symbols_for_the_nation.html. Could you please let us know if we’ve missed the cats, or if there’s another reason you believe they should be included.

Ensemble characters
We will accept labels like “the Council” or “the hunters” for characters in cases where the ensemble does not have different distinct characters in it. For the following fandoms, please either confirm that there are no distinct characters in the group, or pick a single character out of the group you’ve nominated.

  • Captive Prince - C. S. Pacat: Veretian Council

  • The Darkness (Comics): Darklings (The Darkness)

  • 終末のイゼッタ | Shuumatsu no Izetta | Izetta: The Last Witch (Anime): The Royal Guard

All Media Types fandoms
We need clarification from the person (or people) who nominated the following fandoms. Please specify a single version of the canon and provide a link to your nominations page so we can confirm the nomination. If these aren't answered, the fandoms will be rejected:
  • Captain Scarlet - All Media Types, characters: Adam Svenson | Captain Blue, Charles Gray | Colonel White, Conrad Turner | Captain Black, Paul Metcalfe | Captain Scarlet

  • Gone With the Wind - All Media Types, characters: Belle Watling, Careen O'Hara, Mammy, Melanie Hamilton (Gone with the Wind - All Media Types)

  • Goosebumps - All Media Types, characters: Cooper Holmes (The Barking Ghost), Drew Brockman (Attack of the Jack-O-Lanterns), Ginger Wald (The Beast From the East), Michael Webster (The Cuckoo Clock of Doom)

  • The Martian - All Media Types, characters: Beth Johanssen, Chris Beck, Mark Watney (The Martian - All Media Types)

  • Midsomer Murders - All Media Types, characters: Jamie Winter, Kam Karimore

  • A Room With a View - All Media Types, characters: Charlotte Bartlett, Eleanor Lavish

  • The Witches of Eastwick - All Media Types, characters: Alexandra Medford, Darryl Van Horne, Jane Spofford, Sukie Ridgemont

If you notice any problems with your approved nominations - mis-spellings, etc - feel free to comment on this post.

*(NB: that’s not because we rejected ~900, but because 5058 and 3086 are totals of how often the fandom slot was filled out by nominators - whether or not they nominated the same fandom. When we approve a fandom that was nominated by two people, the total number of fandom nominations goes down by 2, and the approved fandom total goes up by 1.)

Dear Trick or Treat Artist/Writer

If you check out my last Trick or Treat (or even Yuletide) letter, you'll probably notice that I've copied a lot over, including some of the structure.

General stuff first!

I love all of the fandoms and characters I'm requesting, so if one section seems longer or shorter than another, it's due to how much I had to say, not how much I love the request. (And also maybe an indicator of where I was when I started running out of energy and ideas and what has gotten at least partial copy-paste treatment. Sorry, RimWorld.) They are all fandoms of my heart, and I'm excited at the possibility of receiving any of them.

Also, this letter is super long, so again, please don't feel obligated to read it all (or at all!). If you already have an idea of what you want to do from just the AO3 requests, go for it! This is all to (I hope) make it easier on you, and I am a big believer in optional details being optional. There being fic or art for my fandoms will make me happy. Everything else is icing on delicious, delicious cake.

This year I'm requesting art or fic in seven fandoms: Dragon Age (Varric), Dwarf Fortress (Cat, Dwarf, Forgotten Beast, Kobold, Necromancer, Overseer), Fallout 4 (Deacon), Naruto (Guy/Gai, Kakashi), RimWorld, The Scumthorpe Files (any), and Rubyquest (Red, Ruby). Each fandom section will include subsections as follows: short summary/promotion and links (for smaller fandoms), general fandom talk, characters-specific prompts (where applicable), trick prompts, treat prompts, art prompts. Feel free to skip straight to what you feel is most relevant. :D

Fair warning: this letter will contain spoilers, so if you have it on your "to watch/to read/to play" list and want to go into it with fresh eyes, you'll want to skip that section.

A note: I've received fic and art in the past for several of my requested fandoms, which I loved! I just want more. If you matched me on one of those, I am sure I will love whatever you make me, whether it's along the lines of the gifts I've already gotten or something entirely new.

For ease of stalking: tuesday on AO3, everysecondtuesday on tumblr

If you've made it this far, I'd like to thank you for participating in Trick or Treat. This is a delightful exchange, and I am excited for and about it.

My number one hope for my gift fic or art is that you have a good time with it, so let me emphasize again that I'm just happy that there will be another fanwork for one of these fandoms. This monster of a letter was mostly an excuse to enthuse about these fandoms, and I truly hope it doesn't put you off or make you worry about whether you can make any of the prompts work. Whatever you end up writing or drawing, I'm hoping it's something you enjoy about the fandom and have fun creating.

Have a happy Trick or Treat!

Might be jumping the gun a bit, but here's a post on which to organize meetups!

Comment here with your location and whether you want to organize or just attend a writing meetup.

I'm in the Boston area, and would like to organize a ~bi-weekly writing-and-coffee/tea meet-up. Likely in Cambridge, flexible to Somerville/Watertown/Boston proper/etc, depending on what people want.

Final number of nominations: 5058

That means that at least 1686 people nominated.

We now move into the sorting phase. Over the next days you will see the fandoms and characters you nominated being approved or rejected. You will also see us make posts here, asking for clarification.

Whenever we have enough questions for a new clarification post, we will move unanswered questions into the new post.. This is to help us keep track of which things are outstanding and prevent us from missing comments on older posts. You can help by keeping an eye on the community and helping to answer questions. The first question post will be up soon.

The evidence post is now closed, and we'll be using the evidence to review fandoms. Thank you to everyone who took the time to submit evidence.

If you are looking at your nominations page and you see that a character has been rejected, it may be that it has been approved under a different name (for example, with a fandom-specific disambiguation). Please wait until the tagset is public before raising the issue.

Lastly, please don't hammer AO3 trying to check if your fandoms have been reviewed. Doing this will only slow things down. We're not saying don’t check, but don’t sit there pressing F5. The tagset will be visible after sorting; at that point you can help us find what problems remain.

Hi fellow Yuletiders! Noms close in less than 24 hours (or maybe they've already closed by the time this is approved?) and as we move into signups and writing and reading, freneticfloetry and I wanted to give a small reminder/invitation (ok honestly, it's a copy/paste job with minor edits... #efficiency) to participate in the Misses Clause Challenge*.

Now in its seventh year, the Misses Clause Challenge was created to promote the inclusion, expansion, and celebration of women in fanfiction. We'd like to challenge you all to think about the ways women are represented in fanworks, and write fic either centered on female characters or fic within a fandom with a rich and diverse cast of characters that includes valuable and important female voices.

Participation is easy! Initially, the challenge set out to include more female characters in fic using the Bechdel Test as a barometer. But honestly, plenty of sources can (and do) successfully pass without putting female characters anywhere near the forefront. So the general rule for participating in the Misses Clause Challenge is simple:

Write women.

That's it! Write women who are celebrated, who are unsung, who are the heroes of their own stories or the unfortunate victims of circumstance. Write women talking, fighting, saving the day, or just going about their business. Write women of all ages, shapes, sizes, races, creeds, sexual orientations, mental and physical abilities, or moral fiber. Write women, full stop.

Easy enough, right? So if you’re willing, and we hope you are…

· Write a Yuletide assignment or treat with one or more women as the focus. Femslash, female POV, ensemble fic, whatever works for you — as long as there's a female character front and center, your fic fulfills the challenge.
· Tag your finished fic with "Misses Clause Challenge".

There is still maybe time to nominate women, if you're so inclined. And there is definitely time to think about requesting prompts that feature female characters so that the letters post is full of options.

From there, search out those that request women, maybe bookmark one for later, or even start a treat. There's a lot of female characters nominated annually and a number of requests will coincide with that. Maybe one of the letters might start or keep the creative juices flowing.

And to all of those who have taken up the challenge, or who are considering doing so this year, I just want to say, on behalf of both myself and freneticfloetry, Thank You. We try to keep this very low key with absolutely no pressure to participate, and yet we're continually blown away by the support and the number of folks who take on the challenge as well as the types of awesome fic that you guys create year after year. So, thank you, again, for your participation, your openness to the challenge, your totally legitimate concerns and critiques. Here’s to Yuletide 2017, and another great wave of new Misses Clause stories.

Sincerely,

G (hauntedd) & Court (freneticfloetry)

*The challenge name was meant to be a punny play on the fic season and a bad movie, and was not meant to be exclusionary in any way. (And yes, the "e" was intentional.)

Moon Woke Me Up Nine Times: Selected Haiku of Basho, by Bashō Matsuo, translated by David Young: A delightful collection. David Young's introduction is informative and easy to read, which is a rarity in poetry collections and must be praised, though you won't learn a thing about Bashō from it. Young says you can get that everywhere else; instead, the introduction addresses Young's approach to translating these poems, and I was quite surprised at the amount of latitude Young gave himself. Due to the differences between the number of syllables in English and Japanese, he disregards the West's belief that haiku must conform to a 5-7-5 arrangement, which is fine by me, but he also elides cultural references he thought would be lost on English-speaking audiences, reorders the lines themselves, and even removes the occasional question mark, and I don't know how I feel about that. The result is lovely, but is it an honest reflection of Bashō's words?

In Young's hands, Bashō's poetry is clear and simple, each haiku a meditation on life and nature. They are, by turns, longing, playful, soothing, and contemplative, and it's remarkable how many sensory details they include. So much is packed into these little sentences, giving you brief glimpses of another life, transporting you to where Bashō was three hundred years ago, listening to the rain, gardening, or:
Big white leeks
washing them off
feeling how cold
The poetry is transcendent, in that it moved me to a different place. Once I came back, though, I wondered a lot about the choices Young made. I really would have liked some translator's notes (outside of those in the introduction), but instead I'll have to content myself with reading Jane Reichhold's Basho: The Complete Haiku and go over her notes to see how their translations differ. This is actually Young's idea, and he helpfully includes an appendix that correlates his page numbers with Reichhold's numbering system for easy comparison.

Really accessible, and highly recommended.

Character Coordination

 Hi all!

This is a post I've been meaning to make for a few years now. Every year we have great challenges and collections, such as Misses Clause (promoting fics that pass the Bechdel Test) and collections for characters of color. However, the posts for those come during sign-ups, when people only have the tagset to work from. If nobody nominated any women or characters of color for your favorite small fandom, you're out of luck.

Look over your own nominations in these next three days. Look at the spreadsheet and the nomiations post on DW and LJ. Are these the characters you want to make requests for, write for, or both? Did you have a free slot and are you nominating them after looking at the requests tab on the spreadsheet? Are you already coordinating with a friend, or friends, to cover a big cast list?

Consider coordinating with fellow fans using the nomiantions posts and spreadsheet in these final days. Who is your cast list comprised of for your fandom? Are there women, are there characters of color, are there characters with disabilites? If someone who likes this fandom wants to participate in Misses Clause, will they be able to? If someone who likes this fandom wants to participate in a chromatic challenge, will they be able to? (Obviously not all fandoms can do this, some fandoms only comprise of a few characters at all, sometimes no one can find someone else to help with nominations. I mean this in general terms.)

I know every year only about 1/3rd of people nominating end up using the nominations coordination posts and spreadsheets. This year, why don't some of us help each other out to make the tagset more inclusive?

Edit: tl;dr: If you want to nominate more characters from a fandom, it's best to coordinate with fellow fans on the nominations pages I've linked above. If you don't want to, you don't have to.

Let Them Eat Cake: Classic, Decadent Desserts with Vegan, Gluten-Free & Healthy Variations, by Gesine Bullock-Prado: If this cookbook were an animal, it'd be a platypus. Male platypuses have venomous spurs on their hind feet. Did you know that? But they only produce venom during breeding season, which is between June and October. Their venom isn't lethal to humans, but its effects have been described as "excruciatingly painful."

This cookbook isn't venomous, and instead of excruciatingly painful, it's actually quite delightful. The author's funny, able to admit when she's made a mistake, and is capable of pointing out the problems of palm oil in a non-confrontational way. The book, though, is like if you started out with a beaver, and then someone was like, oh, but what if I can't do buck teeth? And someone else was like, my daughter only likes animals with duckbills. And then suddenly it's laying eggs and has venomous spurs on his heels.

BECAUSE—I swear this made sense when I started out—this book takes a standard, traditional muffin, quick bread, cake, pie, tart, or cookie recipe, and THEN it gives you a vegan variation, a gluten-free variation, and a "healthier" variation, which in this case means a version with a lower glycemic index and more fiber and nutrients. So, like, grapeseed oil instead of butter, and whole wheat or spelt flour rather than white flour.

It's unwieldy. As someone who is currently cooking gluten-free, I'm fine with checking this out of the library, but I'm not going to buy it. I guess if you were experimenting with your diet, or you bake with wheat at home, but need to make things vegan for the people at work, or gluten-free for your in-laws, or more nutritious for the school bake sale—then maybe. The focus is definitely on the traditional recipe, with little boxes afterwards (or on the pages before, the book's not picky or well organized) that explain how to make it vegan, or GF, or healthier by adding egg substitutes or switching out the flours. Sometimes the vegan variation will require an entirely different recipe, which is actually easier to deal with than a paragraph of text about substitutions, so while I might try making the biscuits and scones, I'm going to photocopy the recipe and write in the GF changes myself. Using this as a book would require a lot of flipping back and forth between the main recipe and the variations. I imagine it'd be very easy to make a mistake and put in the wrong amount of something.

So the layout is kind of baroque, but the colors are nice, and almost every recipe has a photo, even if they're sometimes a few pages away from the recipe. I suspect that the photos are of the traditional recipes, though, rather than any of the variants, because I'm a suspicious person by nature, and we all know vegan or gluten-free baked goods don't always look as nice as the traditional versions. Oh, can you merge two variants together and make a vegan gluten-free whatever? Never once brought up by the author. So I'm guessing...try that at your own risk.

If you're interested in cutting down on wheat or animal products, or if you cook for several groups of people with different dietary restrictions, then maybe this is the book for you. If you're straight up vegan and/or gluten-free, I don't see the point. The recipes are pretty standard fare, except for the cake section which is full-on bananas; they involve a lot of layers, if you have the time for that. Measurements are by volume and weight (grams), and there's a helpful introduction to each recipe, but no storage advice, and the index isn't thorough enough for me.

I have been hoping someone would put up a pretty spreadsheet like in the past, but since that hasn't happened I have made a clunky one. Comment with your noms and desires here with any explanatory commentary, and then you can edit the spreadsheet over here.

(I hope no one's toes are dented.)

(I'd add tags, but I'm not authorized.)

ETA: I should make it clearer that you can edit the spreadsheet directly. I am trying to add things people posted who didn't get them there, but I am not fast. The links are so if people want to ask you to add or change a character they can.

Yuletide Nominations 2017 are open!

Your Nominations Toolset

More nominating tips
When a character could appear in many different versions across many fandoms, or has a generic name, we recommend that you put a fandom disambiguation tag after the name. For example:
-Bonnie Parker (Bonnie and Clyde (1967))
-Robin Hood (Prince of Thieves)
-Tulku (The Shadow 1994)
-Leonardo da Vinci (Da Vinci's Demons)
would all be helpful character names in their respective fandoms.

If you receive an error message that a character was rejected because it was nominated in another fandom, resubmit the character with disambiguation, as above.

If you submit a character that is new or rarely used on AO3, a suggestion from AO3 may appear in bold and in brackets (for example: Razzle (Nicholas "Razzle" Dingley)) next to your nomination once it’s submitted. This is okay, and does not mean that your nomination will be automatically changed. However, if you don't recognize the character in brackets, it is a good sign that you should edit your character nomination and disambiguate it with the fandom you nominated, i. e. as “Character (Fandom Name)”.

Some fandoms, especially short ones such as music videos, do not need character nominations. Others will not be approved without them: RPF and Anthropomorphic fandoms.

As there may be more than one character who has used a superhero name, please make sure it’s clear which character you mean - you may want to use their “wallet” name. For example: Please don't nominate Robin, but instead Dick Grayson or Damian Wayne.

Please double-check the spelling and format of your nominations, both before pressing Submit and after.

When do nominations close?
At 9am UTC on 16 September. This may be the previous day in your time zone. Here is a countdown.

You can edit your nominations until this time.

How many nominations do we get?
Three fandoms, and four characters in each fandom.

If you have questions about nominations, feel free to ask them on this post or at yuletideadmin@gmail.com. If you want to discuss your nominations with other fans, try the LiveJournal community, Dreamwidth community, IRC channel, or Discord server (invite link).

La Petite Assiette: Simple Gluten-Free Baking, by Patricia Harrington: This cookbook has so many typos in it I can only assume it's self-published. Still, it has nice color photos for each recipe and doesn't require a custom flour blend, so it's got my attention. The recipes mostly use white and brown rice flours, golden flaxseed meal, oats, almond flour, some xanthan gum, and not a lot of starch. They cover the basics, like blueberry muffins and three kinds of pancakes, all the way up to the unusual, like abelskivers, which are Danish and require a special pan that looks like you're about to smelt some golf balls.

There are also recipes for five different pastry crusts at the back, though no word of what each is best used for. Their names are in French, which is maybe a clue, but I'm tired and don't have the energy to learn a second language just so I can have pie.

Recipes only occasionally give storage advice, and the index is absolutely worthless, but I'm going to try some of the muffins and see how they go. I'm on the hunt for the perfect blueberry muffin, and these look good.

Please use this post (or its LiveJournal equivalent) to submit evidence to help us consider fandoms’ eligibility for Yuletide 2017.

It’s a good idea to comment on this post if:
  • The fandom you have nominated is closely related to another fandom, and especially, if the related fandom is ineligible for Yuletide.

  • The fandom you have nominated includes several types of media, and you are concerned that the ban on "All Media Types" or "& Related Fandoms" affects it.

  • The fandom you have nominated has too many stories to be eligible for Yuletide, but only because of crossposting between fanfiction.net and AO3, OR because a very small pool of authors has written most of the fics. You need to provide links that clearly show this.

  • The fandom you have nominated appears on either fanfiction.net or AO3 as part of a larger “umbrella” fandom, but you believe you can clearly show that the fics actually about your fandom are under the limit.

  • The fandom you have nominated is a fanwork.

  • The fandom you have nominated has a generic name that is extremely hard to google or can be confused with other fandoms, AND your fandom has no canonical fandom tag on AO3.

  • The fandom you have nominated is obscure and is not in English, and if we go looking for information about it, we won’t easily find any that is in English.

The following will not be considered as evidence that a fandom with a large number of stories is actually under the limit:
  • Crossovers

  • Use of original characters

  • Fic quality

  • Stories that have ambiguous endings but that are marked ‘complete’.

If your fandom has 1100 or more works across ff.net and ao3, including crossovers, that are in English, complete, and over 1,000 words long (see the bookmarklet tool for a quick way to check this), we will not consider any evidence for the fandom that would reduce its numbers.

If your fandom needs evidence, you must submit it before the end of the nominations period. Nominations will begin at approximately 9am UTC on September 8, and will end at 9am UTC on September 16 (Saturday).

Mods and tagmods will read all comments on this post. We will ask questions if we have them, but may not reply to every comment.

You can read this year's eligibility rules on LJ or DW. If you have a question about them, please ask it on those posts, or send it to yuletideadmin@gmail.com.
